The multimedia experience at Chicago's John Hancock Observatory interprets a dynamic city – people, history, culture, quirks – from 1,000 feet in the air.

Originally produced in four languages using propriety hardware and available in both adult and children's versions, the hand-held guide combines casual narration from actor and native David Schwimmer, pithy insider commentary from Tribune newspaperman Rick Kogan, on-the-ground interviews with everyday Chicagoans, and contemporary and archival photos and video of the city. It's a rich-media tale that lets observatory visitors enjoy the view while still feeling a part of the energy on the ground.

Now available in nine languages, the guide is still actively in use more than five years later and continues to delight thousands of visitors to the roof of the city annually.

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS
2007

SKILLS: Strategic Direction, Project Management

The Detroit Institute of Arts' comprehensive 2007 reinstallation was a watershed moment in the world of museum education and interpretation. As part of the thoughtful rethinking of the museum experience and re-presentation of its collections, a set of groundbreaking technology-based learning components were developed in partnership with Pentagram Design. Ranging from digital books to immersive video installations, these applications all exist precisely on an experience continuum of Engagement - Context - Reference, designed to meet the visitor in their comfort zone with content and deliver information they most eagerly seek and can readily absorb.

The Art of Dining video – an application designed to encourage Engagement with seemingly uninteresting 18th-century porcelain – allows users to sit down at an actual period meal, served in a video interface that mimics a table. A stunning silver epergne serves as the centerpiece of the "table," and is also displayed next to it as a star of the museum's decorative arts collection. The classic museum designation of rarified object begins to blur and fade as works transition from glass cases to an experience shared with the visitor.

Beyond delighting museum visitors and redefining the use of technology in the museum space, the DIA's full suite of digital applications received a prestigious MUSE Award for Media + Technology from the American Association of Museums in 2008.
